What is a Spirometry Lung Function Test?

Spirometry is used to see how well your lungs function. The test measures the following:

  • The amount of air you inhale
  • The amount of air you exhale
  • The speed at which you inhale and exhale

During the test, you will breathe into a tube. The tube is attached to the spirometer machine. A clip will be used to keep your nostrils closed.

Our doctor will direct you to take a deep breath and then to breathe out hard for a few seconds. You will need to do this exercise three or more times. This will help ensure your results are accurate. You may be asked to repeat the test if the results are inconsistent.

Our doctor will help you to feel at ease and ensure you understand how the test works. Be sure to follow all of the instructions given to you.

What Conditions Are Diagnosed with Spirometry?

Spirometry is useful in diagnosing several different breathing conditions. This is why doctors order the test to be done. From there, treatment can be started so that you can begin to breathe better.

Spirometry can be used to diagnose the following conditions:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Emphysema
  • Pulmonary fibrosis

Spirometry is used to diagnose other conditions as well. If our doctor suspects that you may have a breathing condition, spirometry is one of the first steps in diagnosis and treatment.

If you already have a breathing condition diagnosis, you may get regular spirometry tests to ensure your condition is being properly managed by your medication or treatment.
